Based in New York point.me, the creators of an online research tool that makes it easy to discover reward theft options in real time, has raised $2 million in seed funding led by PAR Capital Ventures. The tool, now out of beta, searches routes on more than 150 airlines to uncover reward travel options that the company says would have been hard to find otherwise. The site also provides information on how to maximize your airline miles and points.

Point.me CEO and co-founder Adam Morvitz told TechCrunch that the startup was created based on his personal experience booking flights. In 2011, Morvitz was traveling frequently, earning plenty of credit card points and airline miles along the way. As a financial consultant for much of his career, Morvitz says he enjoyed researching the best flights he could find using his points. When his co-workers started asking him how he got business class flights to Europe for a few thousand points, he saw the opportunity to start a business. That same year, Morvitz launched Juicy Miles, a concierge reward flight booking service.

As the company grew to 60 agents, Morvitz knew they needed a way to instantly search all loyalty program options instead of performing manual searches. This led to the creation of point.me in 2019, which Morvitz co-founded with longtime friend and travel expert Tiffany Funk, who previously held executive positions at luxury travel blog One Mile at a Time and advice service PointsPros. To build their metasearch engine, the duo rimagined the possibilities of displaying flight points in an easy to read way.

Point.me is compatible with over 30 loyalty programs, including many credit card rewards programs. Customers can filter search results by program, airline or route to find the best offers available, which will be tailored to their preferences and point balances. The website offers a variety of services, including access to its self-service search tool, a full-service pricing concierge, and elite status and credit card advice.

The company’s standard plan costs $129 per year and includes unlimited searches, personalized results, access to rewards offers, and tips for replenishing your points. Point.me also has a premium plan that costs $260 per year that includes everything in the standard plan, plus a 10% discount on all concierge services, a personalized annual miles and points check feature, and Moreover. The company also offers a starter pass for $5 that gives users access to the standard plan for 24 hours.

“Before point.me, customers had to manually search individual airline loyalty programs to find flight options they could book with their points, which meant a lot of time, frustration and often only got a tiny fraction of the actual value of their points,” point.me co-founder and CMO Tiffany Funk told TechCrunch. “Once you’ve selected a flight, you’re taken to one of the things we’re most proud of, our comprehensive and incredibly detailed booking instructions. Again, the interface isn’t complicated, but we tell you exactly how many points you need to transfer, and then our product team has created these step-by-step flows that really walk you through everything.

With this new funding, point.me plans to continue expanding its product line and improving search engine capabilities, which will require a more in-depth engineering team. The funds will be used to hire front-end and back-end engineers to help improve the core product. The startup will also hire additional customer service agents to improve the customer experience.

WndrCo Holdings invested in the round, with participation from former DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dropbox Business founder Sujay Jaswa and former DreamWorks Animation president Ann Daily. Skinnygirl founder and CEO Bethenny Frankel and her fiancé, real estate executive and film producer Paul Bernon, are also investors in point.me, along with David M. Baggett and Carl de Marcken, co-founders of ITA Software (which is became Google Flights after its acquisition).

Looking ahead, Morvitz says point.me will focus on adding a variety of new features to the service. The company plans to display the cash price of the flight you’re interested in, so you can see an immediate comparison of the value you’re getting for the miles. Point.me also wants to allow users to search for multiple days of flights at once. And he plans to focus on personalized recommendations and results, while suggesting alternatives that would help customers have a better flight experience.

“Longer term, we believe we can fundamentally change the loyalty space from a consumer and business perspective,” Morvitz said. “The combination of our proprietary technology with our unique body of knowledge enables a world where finding points is easy, transparent and valuable for everyone in all global loyalty currencies. Our vision for panoint me goes beyond research. We aim to become the go-to site for loyalty management, using our investment in data to improve the experience of our customers and corporate partners, including AI-powered algorithms to highlight redemptions that customers are most likely to book and using predictive technology to recommend which rewards have the best chance of being available.

While the Start menu got a major overhaul in Windows 11, the search function remains the same. You can press the Windows key, search for files, folders, and even take a look at web results. The problem is that Microsoft Bing powers search results and there is no way to change the search engine to Google. You have the option to disable web search results entirely from the Start menu. Here’s how.

There are two ways to disable web search results in the Windows Start menu. Let’s start.

Use Registry Editor

Using the Windows 11 registry editor, you can create a new registry that disables the web search feature in the Start menu. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Registry Editor.

2nd step: Press the Enter key and open the application.

Step 3: Copy and paste the following path to quickly open the Windows menu.

ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows

Step 4: In the left sidebar, right-click Windows and select New.

Step 5: Click on the key, name it Explorerand press Enter.

Step 6: Right-click on Explorer, select New and choose “DWORD (32-bit) Value”.

Step 7: Rename the new registry key to Disable SearchBox Suggestions and press the Enter key.

Double click on the created registry and type 1 in the Value data area. Press OK and Windows will disable web search from the Start menu.

Close the application, click the Windows key and select the power button to restart the PC.

Use Group Policy Editor

Using the Group Policy Editor, you can disable web search results from the Start menu. This solution will not work for Windows 11 Home edition users. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Right-click on the Windows button and select Run. You can also use Windows + R keys to access it.

2nd step: Type gpedit.msc and press OK at the bottom.

Step 3: The system will open the Local Group Policy Editor application.

Navigate to the following path in the application – User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer.

You need to double-click Windows Components in the left sidebar to expand the menu.

Step 4: Once you are in the File Explorer menu, locate “Turn off showing recent search entries in File Explorer”..’

Step 5: Double click on it. This will open the context menu for making changes.

Step 6: Click on Enabled and press the Apply button in the lower right corner of the window.

Restart your computer and try using Start menu search. You won’t see irrelevant web searches.

Enable SafeSearch in the Start menu

When you disable web search in the Windows 11 Start menu, you also lose benefits like the ability to translate words and convert currencies.

Many disable web search in the start menu to prevent their children from accidentally exposing adult search results on the web. Windows offers an option to enable a filter that removes adult results. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open the Windows Settings app (Windows keys + I).

2nd step: Go to the Privacy and Security menu.

Step 3: Select Search Permissions.

Step 4: Click Strict in the SafeSearch menu.

After enabling this option, Windows will not automatically load web results if they contain adult content. It’s the best of both worlds. You can still enjoy Bing Translate, Currency Converter, and more, and don’t worry about adult content appearing in search results.

Delete Start Menu Search History

To improve your search suggestions, Windows Search stores your search history locally on the computer. You can easily clear this search history from the computer. Here’s how.

Step 1: Launch Windows Settings and navigate to Privacy & Security.

2nd step: Select Search permissions and click the “Clear device search history” button.

Main search in the start menu

The overall web search results in the Start menu implementation could have been better. Although Microsoft has significantly improved Bing in the US, it’s not the same experience in other regions. Also, these Start menu web suggestions tend to clutter the search experience with offline files and folders in the results. Instead of helping users, web results prevent them from finding what they are looking for.

Disabling web search results from the Windows 11 Start menu also speeds up the search process on your computer. The Start menu no longer needs to filter the web to deliver results.

UPDATED 2/18, 10:00 AM PST: This story has been updated with comments from Google’s Danny Sullivan.

A new story anticipating the decline and fall of Google search comes out about every month, but a blog post on Tuesday, titled “Google search is dyingby blogger DKB was different. The blog soared to the top of Hacker News on Tuesday and is already the 11th most voted article on Hacker News. all timewith more than 1,500 comments.

The main argument is that many people have become so disappointed or distrustful of good old Google search results that they now add the term “reddit” to the end of their queries. So instead of searching the world of information that Google and its web crawlers see, you get information and links from the world of things that have been discussed in Reddit land, which are many. “Why are people specifically searching for Reddit? ” the blog post bed. “The short answer is that Google search results are clearly dying. The long answer is that much of the web has become too inauthentic to trust.

“There have been many posts complaining about the quality of Google search in the past few months in particular,” DKB said. fast company via DM on Twitter. His real name is Dmitri Kyle Brereton, and he’s a 26-year-old software engineer who works on the recruiting platform Gem. “I think what made this article different, and the reason I wrote it, was that everyone was talking about the search results being bad, but no one was adequately explaining why it was. was produced.”

The first part of his argument is that Google simply devotes too much space to ads on its search results, including prime real estate at the very top of the results. Brereton points out that Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin recognized this conflict early on. The two acknowledged in a 1998 research paper that ads can go against the grain with good research.

“[W]We expect ad-supported search engines to be inherently biased toward advertisers and away from consumer needs,” the Google founders wrote in a research paper while at Stanford. “Additionally, ad revenue often provides an incentive to provide poor quality search results.”

Of course, when Page and Brin wrote this article, Google was years away from monetizing its search engine. When the company first started serving search ads, they were targeted text ads based on search terms and positioned to the right of search results. They were considered far less intrusive than the banner ads served by other search engines at the time.

Over the years, Google has tried to strike a balance between generating massive revenue from search ads and providing useful search results that encompass the vastness of content on the web. This balance shifted towards profit in 2015 and 2016, as it moved ads from right to top of search results. There are so many ads these days that you often have to scroll down to get to the actual search results.

Google disputes this. The company’s research spokesperson, Danny Sullivan, said in a Tweeter that many Google searches have no ads. “If the goal was to dial it ‘max’, you’d see ads all the time, on all searches,” Sullivan tweeted. “It’s not. But as always, we’ve taken feedback on the ads into consideration.”

Second, Brereton argued that Google search results were degraded by SEO. Because Google has been our “de facto” best search engine for so long, an entire search engine optimization industry has formed around it. Thousands of consulting firms, technology companies, and advertising agency departments exist solely to help businesses get their content to the top of Google search results. (fast company has a growth team that, among other things, specializes in suggesting the best SEO terms to help articles show up in Google News.) Google also gives preference to content from its own properties, Brereton noted. To see this in action, just do a location search – you’ll get Google Maps data. Ask about air travel and you’ll see Google Flights.

Google search has other shortcomings, Brereton said. While this is helpful if you’re trying to remember the capital of South Dakota or the distance to the moon, it’s less so if you’re trying to answer more open-ended questions where you’re looking for a diversity of opinions. . If, for example, you’re trying to find real opinions from real people about a new laptop on the market, you might be better off going to Reddit instead of relying on Google results, he said. Explain.

Google’s Sullivan posted a number of tweets in response to DKB’s blog post (and resulting discussion). He points out that even if people add “reddit” to searches, it indicates that they are still looking for Reddit content using Google’s search engine and not Reddit’s.

“With the addition of ‘reddit’ to a query, some people clearly want great content from Reddit, but for some reason the search isn’t as helpful,” Sullivan said. tweet. “So using Google to successfully locate what you want on Reddit is also a sign that we’re helpful.”

Although Google dominates the search market, Brereton’s argument clearly resonated with part of the tech community. “I think the big reaction and the endless flow of ‘it’s relatable’ [comments] means it’s clear that a portion of the population resonates strongly with this idea that Google search results aren’t good, that Google’s results are inauthentic,” he said.

It’s the kind of thing that might inspire a few hackers sitting in a dorm somewhere to create a new search engine.

Currently, there are several search engines on the web that can be a great alternative to what Google currently offers, as they have more advanced privacy features in some cases, as the results may be broader or shorter compared to those proposed by the one with the capital G.

The results obtained by one and the other will be different, since each uses an algorithm, which does not necessarily mean that they are worse, but, almost certainly, the placement will be different, but with almost the same websites in view .

It will also depend on where they have oriented the search engine itself, because there are those who focus more on the result, others will be more specialists in images and videos, others will launch results faster than Google and there will be those who prioritize security over everything.

That is why it is good to know what are the main alternatives that we currently have from Google, the great ruler.

Content Index:

What is a search engine?

To better understand what we are talking about, you should know that it is a search engine.

It’s nothing but a Internet portal where we can explore network content based on a specific phrase or word, and can also display images and videos.

The first search engine that existed was Archiean FTP file search system, although the first text search engine was wandex, a robot that tried to measure the size of the network and finally also read websites.

Today, there are many search engines on the net and everyone has their own way of workingprioritizing certain parameters over others and having its own characteristics.

Let’s take a quick look at which are the best alternatives to Google.

bing

Bing is the Microsoft Search, which the North American giant launched to end the overwhelming dominance of Google. This is the search engine that Edge has by default, in addition to Windows 11.

The attempt of those in Redmond is not that it has been a success, but it has the second market share, especially in the United States, although it is still very far from being number one.

that yes, the the interface is much more attractive and it turns out Google, since at least the background images change.

bing search engine

yahoo

It is one of the Internet search engines that more years has been with us. It is very popular, so much so that it was once the most used and the undisputed number one.

The best thing about Yahoo is the integration of tools like Finances, answer Where Weatherwhich give you much more value in addition to additional information.

In 2015 reached an agreement with Google use the same search system.

Yahoo search

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo can be an excellent alternative to Google, since its search engine is fast and efficient, but the great thing about this search engine is that does not track users.

This search engine also uses other search engines to improve its search results, but it does all this without sharing a single piece of information about you anywhere.

In this case the the search history is totally private and only shows us one ad per page.

Duck Duck Go Finder

Ask

It is a browser that has been created to answer questionsas it continues to do today, improving its system more and more, although they are far from what search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo offer.

We can ask questions about whatever we want like art, science, math or history among many other things. I know has a very bad reputation being the origin of the navigation bar that appeared during the installation of certain programs.

Ask the researcher

Wolfram Alpha

The big difference between WolframAlpha and other search engines is that we are talking about direct resultsnot web links.

As this type of data is obtained, this search engine is usually used for other types of searches such as mathematical operations, since the result will be the direct problem solvingnot a website where we go to find how to solve it.

Wolfram Alpha Finder

yandex

It is a search engine of Russian origin which is becoming more and more established throughout Europe and which has more and more followers every day, since, thanks to its excellent search engine, fast and accurateit should be added that it has its own tools.

It has its own features when it comes to web analytics, in addition to having a nice security system effective that protects WiFi and does not allow DNS spoofing.

Yandex Search

WebCrawler

It is a very old search engine, the most on this list, since was established in 1994. It passed into the hands of AOL from 1995, to be bought in 1997, in this case by Excite.

Currently it uses the Google and Yahoo engines, so results are quick and accurate. The design, as you can see in the photo above, is extremely simple and without fanfare of any kind.

WebCrawler Browser

Home Page

We are facing another search engine that prioritizes security above all else, so we can be sure that our data is not manipulated.

Any request we make will be without any information about us such as IP address, location, personal information or any other information.

It uses Google’s servers, sending our data completely anonymously, which means it’s not an excessively fast search engine.

Search start page

pile of dog

It is a particular search engine that has two characteristics that make it different.

The first is that we request permission to save searches that we just did and the second is that it works with various search engines along with About, Ask.com, FinWhat, Google, LookSmart, Bing, Teoma and Yahoo.

It’s fast, accurate and has an app for Android and iOS.

DogPile Finder

Lycos

Is a pretty old browsersince it has been on the net for many years. Has its own search engine and which has several free services such as email, weather information, videos, etc.

The design is more attractive than what can be seen in others and the search speed is at a good level. It can be a good option if we exclude Google.

Lycos Researcher

As you may have read, there are several very interesting alternatives to the Google search engine, and this is not the only one that currently works correctly.

If ever Google does not work for you as usual or if you are tired of always using the same one, any of the ones you have just seen will serve you efficiently, quickly and, for some, safely.

Search engines and web browsers are two forms of technology that depend on each other. A browser is required to use a search engine, and a search engine cannot deliver its results without a browser. In this article on search engines and browsers, we compare and contrast these separate but related technologies.

Key points to remember:

  • Browsers and search engines are not the same thing, but their functions depend on each other.
  • Running a search query does not search the entire internet, only the search engine‘s index of URLs.
  • Web pages are HTML files. Browsers are applications capable of interpreting HTML files and displaying them visually on a user’s screen in an interactive format.

There are countless search engines on the Internet today, with Google being by far the most popular search engine. Each search engine has its own index and crawling method, so results will vary from engine to engine.

The same goes for browsers – although they all perform the same basic task, there is still a lot of variation from browser to browser. We’ll focus on the core features that make search engines and browsers what they are.

  • A search engine is a software system that takes user input and searches a database of indexed web pages. A browser is a software application used to access web pages on the Internet.

  • A web browser is an application that can access web pages on the Internet. A browser is software needed to use a search engine and display results in an interactive format.

What is a search engine?

A search engine consists of three main parts: a crawler, a search index and a search algorithm. The search engine takes the user’s information, searches an index of content available on the Internet, and returns results matching the user’s keywords.

How does a search engine work ?

It uses a program called a crawler to search websites on the internet and accumulate an index of URLs available on the web. The crawler will discover web pages and follow their embedded links to discover additional web pages.

google chrome

Google search engine is the most popular search engine in the world and Google Chrome is the most popular web browser.

Then, a mechanism called a search algorithm crawls the index to find and deliver the most relevant results to the user’s input.

Indexing

The next phase of the search process is indexing. After crawlers discover web pages online, they compile the most relevant results into an index or into the search engine’s database of discovered URLs. It’s like a virtual library of web addresses.

When you search for something with a search engine, you’re not exactly searching the entire internet. Instead, you search that engine’s library of indexed URLs. Not everything discovered by crawlers will be stored in the index, and not all websites are discoverable by crawlers.

Some websites may not be indexed because they violate the terms of service of the search engine due to abusive behavior or because the results are not relevant enough. A web page that cannot be discovered and indexed by search engines is a deep web web page. That’s a whole other topic, so we suggest you read our Deep and Dark Web article for more information.

google results

The search algorithm ranks content based on link relevance to keywords.

Ranking

Finally, search engines rank their indexed content. Ranking refers to the order of search results indexed by relevance. The websites at the top of the results page are determined to be the most relevant sites to the user’s query. The search engine uses algorithms to find the most relevant websites by finding sites with the same keywords as the user’s query.

What is a browser?

A web browser is a software application used to view and interact with websites or HTML files. A browser will contact a web server and use a graphical user interface (GUI) to visually display the website on the user’s screen.

firefox dark theme

Mozilla Firefox is one of the few major non-Chromium based browsers.

Once the user accesses a web page on the Internet, the user can interact with the content of the web page via mouse and keyboard. The browser usually saves a log of the user’s browsing history in its storage, along with cookies and cache data. The address bar of most browsers also serves as a built-in search engine.

We’ve taken the time to review all the major browsers and a few lesser known ones as well. Take a look at our best browsers article for more information on a selection of our favorite browsers.

How does a browser work?

A browser is an application that sends requests for information to web servers and displays the information on the user’s screen. Browsers fetch HTML files from remote web servers and interpret them as interactive web pages. Browsers can display content on web pages such as images, videos, text, and other types of media.

Internet Explorer

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been the most popular web browser for over a decade.

Browsers have come a long way since the early days of the Internet. Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator were among the first web browsers. They have since been replaced by modern browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Today, most browsers come with a range of features beyond the singular ability to access and interact with content on the World Wide Web. For example, contemporary web browsers are generally compatible with additional tools that can be added to the browser, also called extensions.

Google operates the largest library of extensions in the Chrome web store. Today, most browsers also include basic security protections to keep users away from known malicious websites.

Web browser components

The main components of a web browser are its user interface (UI), browsing engine, rendering engine, networking component, UI back-end, JavaScript interpreter, and data storage.

Web page interaction controls make up the user interface. The user interface varies from browser to browser, but generally consists of an address bar to enter URLs, back and forward buttons, a bookmarks menu, and a button to refresh web pages or stop page loading.

Between the user interface and the rendering engine is the browser engine. It takes input from the UI and queries the rendering engine. The rendering engine reads HTML documents and displays the requested web content on the screen.

Many renderers are used, but the most common renderer is Blink, the engine used in Google Chrome and most Chromium-based browsers.

The browser’s JavaScript interpreter reads and executes any JavaScript code it finds in a website and sends it to the rendering engine to be rendered. Then, the network component performs the browser’s Internet communication tasks, such as sending HTTP requests to servers.

The UI backend is used to display basic functionality such as windows and combo boxes. It uses the user interface methods of the operating system to provide a generic interface.

The browser stores user data such as cache data, cookies, and bookmarks in a small database called the data persistence layer. Browser storage is located on a local drive on the user’s device. Browsers support a variety of data storage mechanisms, including WebSQL, IndexedDB, localStorage, and FileSystem.

Microsoft has released version 0.53.1 of PowerToys, bringing a handful of new features for power users. This time around, the company is adding the always-on top features that were mentioned in the previous version’s changelog, along with a new web search tool, among other things.

Starting with the always-on-top new tool, it does pretty much what you’d expect. Using a keyboard shortcut (windows key + CTRL + J), you can force the active window to always stay on top of everything else. You can press the hotkey again to cancel it. You can also set a border around the pinned window to make it easier to identify a window set to always be on top.

Another big update of this PowerToys 0.53.1 concerns the PowerToys Run tool. This replacement for the Windows run dialog now also includes the ability to search the web. Entering a query starting with ?? will search the web for anything you write after this command. You can also change the command to trigger a web search if that’s not convenient enough.

A great advantage of this feature is that it actually uses your default browser and search engine to open search results. If you don’t like how Windows Search automatically opens Edge and Bing, this might be a welcome feature. It should be noted that when using Vivaldi as the default browser, the search engine used was always Google, regardless of the default setting. It could be a compatibility issue or a bug.

There is yet another notable addition, which is support for G-code files in File Explorer add-ons. This allows you to preview a G-code file via its thumbnail, if the file contains one.

In addition to this, version 0.53.1 includes fixes, adjustments and other improvements for a wide range of applications included in PowerToys. You can see the full changelog below:

What’s new in PowerToys 0.53.1

  • Changed hotkey (default) to mute camera and microphone from To earn+NOT at To earn+Change+Q to not conflict with a Windows 11 keyboard shortcut

Settings

  • Several accessibility, layout, image, string and icon fixes. Thank you @niels9001

Runner

  • Improved mutex support to prevent running multiple PT Run instances

Fitter

  • REMARK: The new installer currently has a visual quirk when upgrading if you have a custom install path. It will show the default install path, but it will actually overwrite the current location. We are investigating how to resolve this issue.
  • Great progress towards user-based installation vs. whole machine. The upgrade scenario still requires further work.
  • Removed custom bootstrapper and now uses a WiX bundle.
  • Removed unused image assets that were still being shipped. Thank you @niels9001

ARM64 support

  • Defining the WinUI3 proof of concept and committing, we need at least one additional feature, elevation support from unpackaged WinUI 3 apps.

Developer improvements

  • New YAML-based pipeline for building our signed installer. This will allow us to consolidate our CI to use the same file. This was essential for us to unlock the ARM64 and .NET 6 migration.
  • Our submodules will no longer be fetched automatically to avoid locking issues. If you want a refresher on how to do this, head over to our development documentation
  • Location system changed from CDPx to Touchdown. This should remove many localization issues.
  • Consolidation of much of the naming of EXE and DLL files as well as projects
  • Spell checker update. Thank you @jsoref
  • /dup answer added
  • /reportbug /bugreport will request a “bug report” zip

If you haven’t already, you can download the latest version of PowerToys from GitHub, or you can find it on the Microsoft Store. If you already have PowerToys installed, you should be prompted to automatically download version 0.53.1.

Apple has an agreement with Google that it won’t develop its own internet search engine as long as Google pays it to remain the default option in Safari, according to a new class action lawsuit.

Filed in California court earlier this week against Apple, Google and their respective CEOs, the lawsuit alleges the two companies entered into a non-competition agreement in the internet search industry that violates US antitrust laws.

More specifically, the complaint accuses Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai of participating in “regular secret meetings” where Google agrees to share its profits with Apple if it receives preferential treatment on devices like iPhone and iPad.

The class action lawsuit also alleges that Google is making billions of dollars in annual payments to Apple based on an agreement that Apple will not launch its own competing search engine, and that the non-competition agreement includes plans to actively suppress small competitors and acquire potential competitors.

The complaint alleges that advertising rates are subsequently higher than rates would be in a competitive system. He is therefore seeking an injunction prohibiting the non-competition agreement between Google and Apple, a termination of the profit-sharing and preferential treatment agreement, and an end to the multi-billion dollar payments.

Finally, the complaint calls for “the break-up of Google into separate and independent companies and the break-up of Apple into separate and independent companies in accordance with the precedent of the break-up of the Standard Oil company into Exxon, Mobile, Conoco, Amoco, Sohio, Chevron, and others.”

It’s no secret that Apple and Google have a massive financial deal that secures Google’s position as the default search engine on Apple devices. Neither company has ever confirmed exactly how much Google pays to be the default search engine on Apple devices in the US, UK and other countries, but the rumor mill is in the billions.

In 2020, The New York Times reported that Apple receives around $8 billion to $12 billion a year in return for making Google the default search on its devices. According to an analyst, Google’s payment to Apple in 2021 to maintain this status quo could have reached as much as $15 billion.

It’s believed to be the largest payment Google makes to anyone and could account for up to a fifth of Apple’s annual profits. But it has also come under intense scrutiny in the past, particularly from the US Department of Justice, which complaints that the deal is representative of illegal tactics used to protect Google’s monopoly and stifle competition.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority also called the deal a “significant barrier to entry and expansion” for rivals in the search engine market and, in 2020, asked authorities law enforcement to have a range of options to deal with the agreement between Apple and Apple. Google to provide a level playing field for other search engines.

Bringing the antitrust case to a San Francisco court this week, attorney Joseph M Alioto said: “These powerful corporations abused their size by illegally shutting down and monopolizing major markets which, in an otherwise corporate system free, would have created jobs, lowered prices, increased production, added new competitors, encouraged innovation and increased the quality of services in the digital age.”

Apple and Google would likely argue that if payments are in effect for Google to remain the default search option, users can select other search engines in Safari, including Microsoft’s Bing, Apollo Fund’s Yahoo, and Search Engines independent research centers DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.

Apple would also likely point out that it is already in the search engine business and maintains an active web crawler, called Applebot. The crawler works primarily in the background to enhance ‌Siri‌ and Spotlight search results, though earlier reports have interpreted the increased Applebot activity as Apple “stepping up efforts” to develop its own search technology if its agreement with Google became incompatible with antitrust laws.
